Sometimes I know I love you better
than all others I kiss it’s funny
but it’s true and I wouldn’t roll
from one to the next so fast if you
hadn’t knocked them all down like
ninepins when you roared by my bed
I keep trying to race ahead and catch
you at the newest station or whistle
stop but you are flighty about
schedules and always soar away just
as leaning from my taxicab my breath
reaches for the back of your neck

Left me with mouth agape, transfixed. The production was beautiful and scary and despairing and yes, the story felt as hopeless as all the critics say, but god I’ve slept maybe six hours in the past three days so the delirium set in before Act One finished. It was gorgeous.
The way they played with light (right off the bat, too) so it complimented Janáček’s music was breathtaking. There was no applause or bowing or tranquil dimming of lights when the conductor walked out at the beginning. Just sudden blackness and music, taking the audience by surprise.
Favorite moment: I nearly gasped aloud when the pile of rubble—books, papers, trash—fell from above through shafts of white light, and then through the smoke and fog the prisoners emerged, one by one, shadowy figures and music penetrating the haze. Oof.
My chest hurts.

Oh, how I wish he’d left the strap dangling off her shoulder as it originally was painted.
